Musical Performances by Politicians

Dec 29, 2008

by Andre

Politicians are reportedly human beings. Because of this, many of them occasionaly take part in human related activities such as singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. Below is a countdown of my favorite examples of them doing so:

8. MC Karl Rove at 2007 Radio and Television Correspondents dinner.

7. Hugo Chavez singing to his people. Check out his CD If you can find it!

6. Mike Huckabee plays Freebird

5. Awesome Person Sarah Palin plays the Flute

4. Condeleeza Rice plays Piano for Queen Elizabeth II

3. Richard Nixon writes and plays his own song on the Piano

2. Barack Obama sings Happy Birthday to Tiny Tim

1. Bill Clinton rocks out on the Sax

Honorable Mentions:

  • Dennis Kucinich singing “Sixteen Tons” - Link
  • John Mccain Does Streisand - Link
  • John Ashcroft sings “Let the Mighty Eagle Soar” - Link

Dishonorable Mention:

  • Hilary Clinton shouldn’t sing the National Anthem - Link

Other Notable Politicians that played Instruments include (source)(source):

  • Former U.S. President John Quincy Adams played the flute.
  • Former U.S. President Chester Alan Arthur played the banjo.
  • Former U.S. President Benjamin Franklin played the guitar and violin.
  • Former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson played the cello, clavichord and violin.
  • Former U.S. President Harry Truman played the piano.
  • Former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson played the violin.
  • Indian Political/Spiritual Leader Mahatma Gandhi played the concertina.
  • Former British Prime Minister Edward Heath was an organist and conductor.
  • Former U.S. Presidency Candidate Ross Perot played the accordion.
  • U.S. Senator John Kerry played Bass Guitar (album)
Also, because of a nasty habit of mine, this list is very USA-centric. Feel free to Internationalize things up in the comments if you have any good examples! Finally, as I was looking around for material for this post, I came across TIME Magazine’s Top Ten Everything for 2008. The number 1 gimmick of 2008, if that was an actual topic, would definitely be Top Ten Lists! C’est La Vie…
