Racism is something that exists so to discriminate, further stereotype, and construct prejudice onto any number of peoples that originate from different ethnic backgrounds. It has been used through the ages by the ruling class as a mechanism of control and as a means to manipulate the unfortunate masses. It places unjustified negative characteristics onto certain peoples based on physical attributes entirely independent of their capabilities as human beings.
It is something that has existed during the entire stretch of Western colonialism, and undoubtedly in prior ages. Racism is something that still exists today, albeit in a muted resemblance to what it once was.
In the United States for example, hundreds of years of extreme racism have eased into whatever you see around today. This was done through protest, sacrifice, rebellion, song, poetry and every other method available to produce change. Federal laws have, notably since the civil rights movements of the 20th century, been established to promote equality, prohibit segregation, and finally make right what the 1st and later the 14th amendments to the Constitution should have done a century before. Unfortunately, putting something into law doesn’t necessitate its enforcement. All forms of social change take time to mature and the eradication of racism is one of these changes.
The hope is that after every successive generation we will find a greater sense of unity as a people as a whole.
We will not be judged by our skin color, but by the content of our character… or something like that. And after every passing generation, I think this dream might actually become realized.
A New Era is Born
Those finding themselves in today’s generation are likely to grind their teeth in disapproval when a grandparent makes a passing comment they only superficially understand. I wish a black person would serve us in this Jamaican restaurant don’t you? It would seem that much more authentic! He might say, wishing to sound accepting and culturally sensitive to the standards of the day. Somewhere along the road the grandparent missed the point altogether.
I’m not racist, I find Chinese people extremely enjoyable to be around. Your father might say as you ponder the irrelevance of his proclamation. What difference does it make who serves us? Why wouldn’t you enjoy the company of Chinese people? You may dismiss the comments as being of a historical nature.
New generations are less likely to use politically correctness as a means in which to keep in line with the status quo. Instead, ideally speaking, there are simply no gripes to be had when it comes to competing and coexisting in today’s society.
There is a genuine sense in today’s youth that racism may not be resolved in society as a whole, but that at least their involvement in it is a non-issue. So what if that person is black? I don’t understand the point you are trying to make. A young member of society will declare.
Unfortunately, A New Sense of Social Superiority is Born
It is a sort of egotistical prejudice that excuses, through mockery and jest, all of things that supposedly once were.”
There is a confident self assurance that no matter how one presents him or herself to others, the racism of years gone by has no barring on the new way. In recent years, this sense of self imposed purity and separation from world history has brought about lightheartedness to racism. There exists the arrogance that the new generation is above those who have come before. It is a sort of egotistical prejudice that excuses, through mockery and jest, all the things that supposedly once were.
What I speak of is the ironic racism, the meta-bigotry that has been showing up in some of today’s most celebrated comedies. Comedy routines by the likes of Sarah Silverman, sitcoms like The Family Guy or The Office or movies like Borat, all seem to have an underlying understanding and acknowledgement that racism is indeed a horrible thing. Yet, feel that they being equipped with this understanding excuses them to make ironic racial slurs for their own benefit.
The 1990s, an era of political correctness to a fault, are long over and these new acts may be a reactionary overcompensation to this. But to suggest that it is merely an example of modern day comedy refuses to consider that old forms of racist comedy could have used a similar defense.
Examples in the Social Bookmarking Circuit
Beyond this ironic racism in the mediums just touched upon, it is becoming more prevalent in the Internet based discussion threads that I frequent. For example, in a recent reddit post about an Internet browser designed specifically for African-Americans, a long list of potential browser names were proposed. Examples included BETscape, Hip-hOpera, Rastafari, Koonqueror, Chrome 24s, and Firefoxxy Brown.
Throughout this thread, and countless others on sites like Digg, and Fark are instances of similar happenings. I would be lying to say that I’ve never been involved in similar conversations in the past. I am simply submitting my thoughts not trying to exempt myself from anything and the point remains.
What all of these methods of communication allow for is the shadow of anonymity. There is a comfortable separation from the person performing the act, and the varied audience that is likely to be receiving it. Similarly, you might joke about certain things with your close friends over a few drinks, yet never utter them out in public for fear being called out on. Based on my experience, the target usually displays that glint of disapproval even when in the company of friends who are supposedly above racism.
It is modern day bullying by a new generation of arrogance. Ultimately there is nothing new or revolutionary taking place. This type of thing will surely continue in the same way it did in what should luckily be considered a more hateful period. I am not here to suggest anything of the sort. I would just like to make clear that ironic racism is still racism.

This blog is simply a description of what I see around me in the world today. Using whatever relevant knowledge I have acquired throughout my life time, my intention is to continue writing articles that are interesting to me, with opinions and biases that are absolutely my own.

And Positive Discrimination is still Discrimination.
