Breadcrumbs are a navigation technique used in user interfaces (i.e. web browser). Its purpose is to give users a way to keep track of their location within programs or documents.
Path
Path breadcrumbs are dynamic and show the path that the user has taken to arrive at a page. A simple example can be seen in the “Back” and “Forward” history of an active web browser session. Just a guess, but as far as establishing copyright, I think path breadcrumbs could be used because of their ability to track information to the original source.
Location
Location breadcrumbs are static and show where the page is located in the website hierarchy. Tells the user where they are, not how they got there. Example at top left of this page.
Attribute
Attribute breadcrumbs give information that categorizes the current page. Example here

Also, the Internet seems to disagree with your assessment that Pepsi and Coca-Cola are owned by the same people.
